One of the most dramatic and unspoiled places in the country is Milford Sound, a narrow inlet where sheer mountains rise up out of the sea, and waterfalls plunge into the deep waters.  If parts of the sound seem vaguely familiar, the spectacular landscape was the setting for several scenes in the recent Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

Milford Sound, or Piopiotahi, as the Maoris know is situated on New Zealands South Island, about a five hour drive from Queenstown.
